Techniques
We primarily fish with fly gear. For trout we may throw sinking lines with streamers during the day and floating lines with dry flies at night. Spring and Fall we use floating lines and roll cast indicator's. In the end of the Summer during the first few waves of Kings I like to target them with spinning gear, and again in the Winter I run plug rods for lethargic steelies. If you have a preference please let me know and I can accomodate you.
Trout:
Streamer fishing is one of the most productive and exciting ways to land a trophy trout. We primarlily fish with streamers in high and dirty water conditions when nothing else will work. This is usually in the Spring, but can happen anytime the river is blown out. Dragging giant bunny strip streamers is a real work out. You will roll/turn and hook fish using this technique.
Dry fly fishing starts around May, and will continue through the end of the Summer. Begining with Hendricksons and the Early Black Stone through fishing Hoppers in August you will have a ball watching the fish come up and take your fly from the surface. Regarded by many as the only true way to fly fish, dry fly fishing is an absolute blast. Don't expect to catch the fish of a lifetime, but quite often the shear numbers outweigh the size in this game.
Once the majority of the daytime and evening hatches have wound down, we really focus on night fishing. This is done primarily with a mouse imitation and they get hammered! The brown trout that feed on these are carnivors and don't want to get cheated out of a free lunch so to speak. This can be a real challenge and thrill to take a trophy in the pitch black. We also get shots at steelies using this technique. In fact it is probably the most constistent opportunity to take a trophy trout.
Salmon:
Salmon fishing begins in the late summer. We can fish several area streams looking for the early runners. By mid August the lower stretches of the PM are starting to get fishable numbers. These fish a chrome and fresh in from the lake. They rest in the deep shady pools and are easy marks for crankbaits. I really enjoy this fishing and is probably the most exciting way to take a king salmon. We use light spinning tackle and a variety of crankbaits to entice these monsters into smashing the lure. It is not uncommon to get hit so hard you nearly loose the rod. This is an early morning bite and we hit the river prior to daybreak.
Once these same fish move upstream we target them with fly gear. Now it is pretty tough to get them to bite a fly once they have been spawning, however with the right presentation and approach you can enjoy double digit hook ups all day long. The trout fishing really picks up too as the female salmon are laying millions of eggs in the river.
Steelhead:
As the salmon spawning process winds up, the steelhead move into the same areas looking to pack on some Winter calories in the form of salmon eggs. The egg bite is great all of the way through October. As Novemeber and December come around the fish tend to hole up and slow down a little bit. We still can take them on the fly, however this is prime plugging time. If you want a laid back easy way to catch steelies, this is it. Plugging is a blast and low impact, highly effective method of crushing Fall/Winter steelhead. You can fish this method with a great deal of success through the entire Winter, in fact some say a really cold day (20 degrees or less) is almost better. One thing is for sure, you won't have much competitiion on the water this time of year.
As Winter loosens it's grip and Spring rolls around the steelies that have been in the river are quick to spawn. The Spring run of fish find their way into the river with each rain. This is probably the best time of year for shear number of hook ups, but it can get tough at times especially with the weir that we have to contend with. As the fish make their way to the spawning grounds you can find them holed up nearby and very willing to take a fly.
